چکیده

Further to the paper by Staron, Jamnig, Leitner, Ebner & Clemens [J. Appl. Cryst. (2003), 36, 415±419], the following points are made. Characterization of the precipitation process in maraging steels is dif®cult, primarily because the precipitates formed are on the nanometre scale. Identi®cation of the precipitate type is complicated by the fact that its composition evolves during ageing, even when the precipitate type remains unchanged. Interpretation of experimental results should be treated with caution, especially when indirect methods, such as small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), are used. Atom-probe ®eld ion microscopy (APFIM) has proved to be capable of determining the type and composition of the ®ne precipitates in maraging steels. The advantages and disadvantages of SANS and APFIM are brie ̄y discussed.

The Effect of a Two-Stage Heat-Treatment on the Microstructural and Mechanical Properties of a Maraging Steel

Maraging steels gain many of their beneficial properties from heat treatments which induce the precipitation of intermetallic compounds. We consider here a two-stage heat-treatment, first involving austenitisation, followed by quenching to produce martensite and then an ageing treatment at a lower temperature to precipitation harden the martensite of a maraging steel. It is shown that with a su...

The Effects of Finish Rolling Temperature and Cooling Interrupt Conditions on Precipitation in Microalloyed Steels Using Small Angle Neutron Scattering

Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) was used to quantify the precipitate characteristics (i.e., mean precipitate size, number of precipitates, and distribution broadening) in X-70 and X-80 pipeline steel and in grades 80 and 100 microalloyed steel plate. The precipitate distributions measured for the different steels were correlated with the finish rolling temperature (FRT) and cooling interr...

X-ray diffraction peak profile analysis of maraged Fe-Ni-Mn steels

X-ray diffraction peak profile analysis was used to identify changes in the lattice distortions during isothermal aging of Fe-10Ni-7Mn (wt. %) maraging steel. Integral peak breadths were analyzed using classical Williamson-Hall equation taking the elastic anisotropy into account. It was found that substantial lattice distortions rise during precipitation hardening which depend strongly on the s...

Magnetic Micro-probe Determination of the Condition of Maraging Steel

Microstructural and mechanical properties of precipitation-hardened maraging steel could be stated on a basis of magnetic properties of such a material. A correlation between mechanical and magnetic properties of the maraging steel is treated from the view of non-destructive testing during and after heat treatment as well as during use under unfavourable conditions at elevated operating tempera...
